Meet the Doctors

John N Crawford, MD FACR

Dr. John Crawford co-founded Radiation Oncology Associates in 1983, after serving as Chief Resident in Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Virginia and practicing with Fort Wayne Radiology from 1976 to 1983. Dr. Crawford takes a special interest in intraoperative radiotherapy, intracavity brachytherapy, and combined modality radiation-chemotherapy treatments. Dr. Crawford received his fellowship from the American College of Radiology in 1996, and he is pleased to be a part of what he deems a dynamic field that combines high technology with high-touch. Dr. Crawford finds the intense doctor-patient relationship rewarding, and he also enjoys the high tech aspects of the job. He participates regularly in continuing education on the latest in diagnostic and treatment methods. Dr. Crawford is currently working on protocols for various malignancies through cooperative research efforts with local medical oncologists. Dr. Crawford has contributed to the community personally by serving for 12 years on Fort Wayne City Council. He enjoys tennis in his leisure time..

Deepchand Bajpai, MD FACRO

Dr. Deepchand Bajpai co-founded Radiation Oncology Associates in 1983 after practicing with Fort Wayne Radiology from 1979 through 1983. Dr. Bajpai completed his residency at Hahneman Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he is board certified in Radiation Oncology with expertise in all areas of oncology. He received his fellowship through the American College of Radiation Oncology. He was the first radiation oncologist in Indiana to establish a High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy machine that allows radioactive material to treat malignant tumors inside the patient via catheters or tubes, and he has a special interest in HDR Brachytherapy for lung, esophageal and gynecological cancers. Dr. Bajpai also has expertise in prostate seed implants, and he works closely with local urologists to optimize this modality of treatment for prostate cancer. He remains current in multi-modality therapies utilizing chemotherapy along with surgery and radiation therapy, thereby maximizing curative treatment for his cancer patients. Most importantly, Dr. Bajpai takes personal satisfaction in helping patients afflicted with cancer.

R. Prasad Mantravadi, MD, FACR, FACRO

Dr. R. Prasad Mantravadi joined Radiation Oncology Associates in 1983. Prior to joining private practice, he was on the tenured faculty as Clinical Associate Professor at Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine and the University of Illinois Hospital. He is currently on the clinical faculty as Associate Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Mantravadi received his Fellowship from the American College of Radiology and the American College of Radiation Oncology in May 2000. He has extensive experience in treating breast, colorectal, and head and neck cancers, and has expertise in interstitial implants for gynecological malignancies.
 
Dr. Mantravadi serves as chairman of the clinical trials committee of Hoosier Oncology Group, and is Emeritus member of the H.O.G. Executive Committee. He was honored by the Hoosier Oncology Group in April 2010 in Indianapolis for being the Founding Member and for 25 years of service.

Interaction with the patient and the patient's family, in addition to treating cancer, is what motivated Dr. Mantravadi to pursue a career in radiation oncology. Dr. Mantravadi’s personal philosophy is that a radiation oncologist's responsibilities go beyond the day-to-day interaction with patients, and includes public education and volunteer work. He received the American Cancer Society Lane Adams National Award in 1999 for providing outstanding, compassionate, high-quality care to cancer patients.

 
 
 
 

David Trenkner, MD

 
Dr. David Trenkner has been a partner at Radiation Oncology Associates since 1986. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982 and then performed his residency at the Washington University School of Medicine, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Division of Radiation Oncology, where he graduated in 1986. Dr. Trenkner completed his board certification in June of 1986 and joined Radiation Oncology Associates immediately upon certification. In his 24 years of radiation oncology practice, Dr. Trenkner has had the opportunity to specialize in all areas of radiation oncology. He is active in the Fort Wayne community and he currently serves as co-chair of the Parkview Cancer Committee, is on the board of Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, and is an emeritus board member of United Way of Allen County. Dr. Trenkner believes it’s important to give patients as much information as possible about their cancer and treatment options to help them become better equipped to deal with their disease. He enjoys playing golf in the summer and snowboarding in the winter with his friends and family.
 

Marc Apple, MD

Dr. Marc G. Apple came to Radiation Oncology Associates in 1998 from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he was Chief Resident in the radiation oncology program. He is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Apple's background includes specialty resident training in radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, and surgery. During his residency, his training focused on prostate seed implants (brachytherapy), stereotactic radiosurgery (brain cancer), and conformal techniques of external beam radiotherapy.
 
Dr. Apple is involved in ongoing, progressive research and development in the field of radiation oncology. He has received several specialty research-specific awards and authored and coauthored several articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and new technology textbooks. Dr. Apple invented and holds several patents for medical devices currently under development, and he is the primary investigator in an FDA approved clinical trial for various new therapies and technologies.
 

Xiao Lin, MD, PhD

Dr. Xiao Lin joined Radiation Oncology Associates in July of 2002 after completing her residency at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.  Dr. Lin was born and raised in Shanghai, China where she attended Shanghai Medical University. After graduating from medical school she completed two years of residency before coming to the United States for graduate school. In 1995, Dr. Lin received her Ph.D. in Radiation Biology from Florida State University. Dr. Lin’s clinical experience includes extensive training in 3-D conformal therapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Low Dose and High Dose brachytherapy, interstitial and vascular brachytherapy, radiopharmaceutical therapy, prostate seed implants and stereotactic radiotherapy. Dr. Lin has interest in both adult and pediatric cancers, and she is highly involved in the IMRT program at ROA.

Brian K Chang, MD

Dr. Brian Chang is a board-certified radiation oncologist who joined Radiation Oncology Associates in 2007 after completing his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he served as Chief resident for two years.  Dr. Chang has written a number of first author publications in peer reviewed journals and a textbook chapter on topics ranging from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and locally advanced lung cancer to stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy, in collaboration with the leaders in those respective fields of radiation oncology.  He has also served as an expert reviewer of radiosurgery publications for the American Journal of Clinical Oncology.  Dr. Chang is the Principal Investigator of Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) trials in Fort Wayne, the leading clinical trials group in Radiation Oncology, where he feels he can make a real difference in the battle against cancer by offering access to the most cutting edge therapies to the patients in the region in his continual efforts to improve their survival and quality of life.

Dr. Chang’s clinical areas of interest and expertise include High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy for gynecological and breast cancers, IMRT, intracranial radiosurgery, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), and combined modality therapy.      

 
 
 

Thomas Chung, MD

 
Dr. Thomas Chung joined the ROA team in January 2010, and came to ROA from the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, where he established himself as a leader in the field of Radiation Oncology as Head of the Radiation Oncology Department and the Breast Health Center. Dr. Chung’s experience and expertise places him at the forefront of Radiation Oncology, with experience implementing Electronic Medical Records at NMCSD and serving as a principal investigator for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), the leading clinical trials group in Radiation Oncology.
 
Dr. Chung’s educational background includes the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1996. He completed his residency at the University of Michigan in 2001, where he served as Chief Resident from 2000-2001. Dr. Chung’s significant experience in the areas of new technology and clinical research both complement and enhance ROA’s multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.
 
In his free time, Dr. Chung enjoys racquetball, electronics, and spending time participating in family and church activities.
